Does Wallpaper Affect Battery Life of Smartphones and Tablets


This has been long debated among smartphone users. While there’s no doubt that live wallpapers eat up more power, many believe that the use of bright and colorful (static) wallpapers can also decrease battery life faster. This is actually true but this phenomenon only affects certain type of displays because different manufacturers use different kind of display technology.

Two of the most popular display technologies used today are LCD and AMOLED. LCD or Liquid Crystal Displays are the most widely used screens on Android smartphones or tablets. Nexus 5 and Xperia Z use this type of display. LCDs have actual crystals which are illuminated by the lights underneath them or backlit. So in this case even you have all black wallpaper, the backlit is still on to illuminating the dark surface. This means your LCD screen is lit up almost all the times and it uses lots of power to do so.

AMOLED or Active Matrix Organic Light Emitting Diode is also a popular display techonology used in Smartphones, Tablets and TVs. There are also OLED displays which are different because they don’t use active matrix. Most of the Samsung smartphones like Galaxy S4, S5, Note 4 use AMOLED. The latest Moto X and Nexus 6 also use this display tech. AMOLEDs are less power hungry than LCDs because AMOLEDs are lit up pixel by pixel unlike LCDS, where all the pixels are illumined all the time. So if you have dark wallpaper in AMOLED display, those dark areas actually don’t lit up and become true black. You can do further research to study about the underlying tech of AMOLED involving electroluminescence.

 How do you save battery life via wallpaper

If you have an LCD display then the choice of wallpaper won’t affect your device’s battery life. Fortunately, devices with LCDs come with larger batteries, power efficient processor or some battery saving software features. Now, if you have an AMOLED display, you can do the following to save your battery life:


  • Use a all-black or darker wallpaper and themes. AMOLED displays with dark wallpaper/theme can reportedly save over 8% of battery life at full brightness. Source: XDA  
  • Use nightmode: Many e-reader apps come with nightmodes which turn background into black and text into white so that it’s easier to read at night. This function also saves battery life when used on AMOLED screens. 
  • Dark Screen filters: There are screen filter apps which add darker shades to your android screen.
  • Dark Themes: Some ROMS and android launchers also support dark themes where all the icons, texts and backgrounds are turned into black or monochrome.

How to tether USB with a Samsung Galaxy S4

I have recently moved house and as anyone who moves house will know the internet connection they have wont be instantly activated at their new home. Fortunately thanks the "The One Plan" from 3 Ive not been without internet thanks to the ability to tether that the plan includes.

Tethering, for simplicity terms is where a laptop (or computer, or games console, etc) shares the internet signal that the phone is using. Effectively it uses the phone as a modem. You can tether either by bluetooth or by USB

This guide will show you how to tether with a Samsung Galaxy S4 via a USB cable (that now comes as standard as part of the phones charger). Though before we go any further there are a few things to be aware of.

Firstly your phone will need to be picking up a mobile internet signal, secondly you will need to have your phone connected to whichever device you want to use (via USB) and thirdly you can incur data charges (and a lot of them for tethering) so make sure your plan allows tethering!

To start you will need to open up the phones "Settings" menu. If you dont know how yo do this, you will need to go to a home scree and press the phones "Menu" button, then select "Settings".

The first screen you will see in the settings screen is the "Connections" screen which will look like the screenshot on the right hand side. The first option you need to select from this menu is "More networks".

The screen you will then be taken to should look like the one on the left with 4 options. The one you need to select at this point is the 3rd one down, the one called "Tethering and portable hotspot".

After selecting the "Tethering and portable hotspot" option will see a new menu with 4 options (including "Help") from this set of options click on "USB tethering" and make sure a little tick goes in to the box.


After youve ticked the "USB tethering" option you should notice that not only has the box got a tick in but that a new icon has appeared at the top of your screen (a little blue one that you can see in the bottom screen on the left). This means the phone is sharing a connection with your device.

Now the next step depends on what you are connecting it to. For a laptop or computer your device should treat the connection as a simple wired connection, as if you were using a USB modem (because thats effectively what you are doing) for other devices, i.e and Xbox or a Wii things may be a little more complicated (unfortunately weve not tested those).

When you are done tethering you merely need to unplug the cable from your phone or untick the "USB tethering" check box.

Once again, before you use this guide, be aware, tethering can run up major data charges. Please make sure you are on a plan that allows tethering and make sure you stay inside your limits.

Speakerphone loudness test

A loudspeaker that is nice and... well, loud, is a nice asset for your mobile. Whether its hearing the other person on the speakerphone or your phone ringing from the other room, or even pla ying music on your get-togethers, a loud speaker is definitely something thats nice to have.
And while the quality of the loudspeaker sound is difficult to measure and is for the most part a subjective matter, we can effectively measure how loud it is.

We do our tests in a soundproof studio taking measurements with the handset loudspeaker facing the loudness meter at a distance of exactly 1 m. For each test we make several consecutive measurements - we usually disregard the highest readings and take the lowest of the maximum values, as thats least likely to have been misread. We test three different types of audio samples for three different scenarios:
1) A phone ringing. For the first part of the test we use a ringtone which resembles the ringing of an old rotary phone, because it seems that most phones do well when we use it.
2) Pink noise. Next we try a sample of pink noise. Our readings with it are pretty indicative on how well the handset loudspeaker can play most music.
3) Human voice, male. This is an important test, since if you tend the use the loudspeaker for speakerphone purposes, loudness is really important, regardless of whether you are in the conferen ce room or in your car.
Once we have the results in db for all three sound samples, we sum them up and use a in-house developed formula to produce a qualitative description of the loudness levels: Below Average, Average, Good, Very Good and Excellent.
As many of our results are separated by a difference of only a few decibels, it is important to keep in mind that the decibel is a logarithm ic unit, which means that a reading of +3dB represents roughly two times the power.
Wed like to reiterate again that this test is not about the quality of the sound produced by the loudspeaker. A mild, relatively deep-sounding loudspeaker that soothes the ear wont do well in this test. Instead, what we are after is pure peak loudness - its our hunt for the loudest phone, ever.

Battery life

In gauging battery life, its hard to perfect a methodology that lets you cover all of the various use scenarios without having to test for weeks on end. Whether it be display, audio quality, or camera, the goal with all of our tests is not only to provide you with the clearest, most comprehensive examination of a particular device, but to also provide it to you in a timely manner. Our battery test is no exception.
With each battery test youll see four different numbers, each ref lecting different types of battery-consuming activities. The test revolves around three basic tasks, which we feel are most commonly performed by smartphone users: making calls, browsing the web and playing video.
The first test is the talk time test, which measures how long it takes to deplete the battery by making voice calls. Bearing in mind that most screens automatically turn off during a call, weve made sure our set up accounts for this. We close all applications which may further strain the battery, too.
The web browsing test is performed using an automated script which reloads a webpage every ten seconds. There are no flash elements on the web pages, so the playing field is even. The brightness of the phones displays is set to 50% and we use a Wireless N router placed a few meters away to get full connectivity bars.
In our video playback test we measure how long it takes for a device to run its fully charged battery down to 10%, while looping a standard-definition video. We stop at 10% since most devices shut their video players at this point. The display is again set to 50%, and all radios on the device are switched off (Airplane mod e).
Finally, our overall longevity rating gives you an idea of how much battery backup you can get on a single charge. A score of 40h means that youll need to fully charge once every 40 hours if you do one hour of 3G calls, one hour of video playback and one hour of web browsing daily. Essentially, its an aggregated and normalized score, which factors in the three mentioned tests along with the real-life standby power consumption, which we also measure.

Manufacturers measure talk time in controlled conditions and the quoted numbers are rarely reached in real-life scenarios. These numbers are best used as reference when comparing phones from the same manufacturer because battery life measurement methodology will probably vary from manufacturer to manufacturer.

Problem: My phone will not hold a charge..it will only stay on when plugged into outlet otherwise it would turn off and turn self back on continuously on its own. Now it wont stay on for anything.
Solution: There’s a possibility that this issue could be caused by a weak battery. Try getting a new battery first then check if the issue gets fixed.

If the problem remains even with a new battery then charge your phone for at least 20 minutes before turning it on. With the charger still connected turn on your phone then backup your data. Once a backup has been made I suggest you do a factory reset.

The new flagship, Samsung Galaxy S7 (#Samsung #GalaxyS7), has a huge 3000mAh battery, which is more than enough to power the device for the entire day without connecting to the charger. Samsung already harnessed majority of the technologies used in its newest devices especially its Super AMOLED display. So, you can expect it to last longer even with heavy usage than the previous Galaxy devices.

But even so, the manufacturer didn’t get rid of the features that will help the phone in conserving energy. Both the Power Saving Mode and the Ultra Power Saving Mode still exist. Owners who are always on the go are among the ones that can greatly benefit from these features, although enabling them means handicapping the phone.
I n this post, I will guide you how to enable these features as well as show you some ways on how to extend the battery life of you device.

TURNING ON GALAXY S7 POWER SAVING MODE

There’s a switch you can flip to turn on this feature, however, you can also delay when the Power Saving Mode will take effect if you don’t want it to handicap itself immediately. Here’s how…
Step 1: From the Home screen, tap the Apps icon.
Step 2: Find and touch Settings.
Step 3: Scroll to and touch the Battery icon.
Step 4: You may now tap on Power saving mode option to open its settings page.
Step 5: Now, touch the slider to turn it on.
Step 6: Once enabled, you can choose from the following:
  • Immediately â€" to activate it as soon as it’s enabled
  • At 5% battery power â€" it engages once the battery reaches 5%
  • At 15% battery power â€" it turns on when it reaches 15% battery
  • At 20% battery power â€" enables when there’s 20% battery left
  • At 50% battery power â€" turns on as early as 50%
So, what happens when Power Saving Mode is engaged?
The Messages, Email and all other apps that use sync to pull updates from their respective servers won’t update until you open them. Meaning, your emails won’t come in automatically; you will have to open the app to receive new messages.
You may also notice your device’s performance to decrease. There might be occasional freezes and lags and it might not be as responsive as when Power Saving Mode is disabled.
Moreover, location services won’t function and background data usage is disabled.
However, all these features will be re-enabled once you plug your phone in to charge as Power Saving Mode will be automatically disabled, although it re-e ngages once unplugged and if the owner didn’t turn it off manually.

TURNING ON GALAXY S7 ULTRA POWER SAVING MODE

Now, if you really want to even conserve battery, the Ultra Power Saving Mode will help you accomplish that.
Step 1: From the Home screen, tap the Apps icon.
Step 2: Find and touch Settings.
Step 3: Scroll to and touch the Battery icon.
Step 4: Touch Ultra power saving mode to enter its settings page.
Step 5: Touch the slider to turn it on.
Once enabled, the following will happen to your phone:
  • A grayscale theme will be applied to your Home screen
  • Only three applications will be made available, namely; Phone, Messages and Internet (web browser).
  • All restrictions from Power Saving Mode will also be applied in Ultra Power Saving Mode
The Galaxy S7 uses the more advanced Super AMOLED display so when it is using the grayscale theme, only the pixels underneath th e characters are lit. Needless to say the pixels covered by the black area are all turned off.

VIEWING GALAXY S7 BATTERY STATUS

Now that you know how to enable phone power saving modes, it’s time you learned how to view the battery status and selectively force close apps.
  1. From the Home screen, tap the Apps icon.
  2. Find and touch Settings.
  3. Scroll to and touch the Battery icon.
In this page you can see the estimated time left before you are required to connect the charger. You can also see the processes and apps that are using the battery. To close an app or process, just tap it and hit the Force Stop button. If you want to view the actual percentage of the battery, just touch the toggl e switch next to Show battery percentage option.

REDUCING GALAXY S7 BATTERY USAGE

If you don’t want to turn on any of the two power saving modes, there are things you can do to minimize battery usage in your device. You may…
  • Turn off GPS.
  • Disable Bluetooth.
  • Turn off mobile data and Wi-Fi.
  • Disable auto-sync for all apps and accounts.
  • Don’t activate live wallpapers.
  • Set the backlight timeout settings to a shorter time.
  • Use aut omatic brightness or set it to a lower level.
  • Disable all Smart features to disable their respective sensors.
  • Turn off the Always-on Display feature.
Without battery, your new Galaxy S7 will be just another expensive paperweight so I hope that these things can help you conserve battery when you need to.

Problem: My s4 won’t open my works Wi-Fi log in page, it connects to the Wi-Fi but just won’t open the log in page or let me go to it manually. Only thing that has changed is i recently updated to 5.0.1 Every other Wi-Fi is fine just not with this portal.

Solution: Try forgetting the Wi-Fi connection then connect to it again. If the issue still persists then follow the troubleshooting steps listed below.

  • Wipe the cache partition of your phone from the recover mode. This will delete the temporary data stored in your phone which if corrupted can cause this problem.
  • Start your phone in Safe Mode then check if the issue occurs. Sometimes an app you downloaded can cause this problem. This is how you check if this is the case. If you are able to connect to your work Wi-Fi on this mode then the problem could be caused by an app. Find out what app this is and uninstall it.
  • Do a factory reset. This will bring your phone back to its original condition. Make sure to backup your phone data before performing this.
